The Original Graduate, James J. "Babe" Henderson hat is a tribute to a trailblazer in Hampton’s story. As a student, Babe was a member of the Hampton Institute Choir that toured Europe in 1930. In 1968, he was honored with the centennial medal alongside 12 other distinguished alumni. Mr. Henderson made history in 1974 when he was elected the first African American chairman of Hampton's Board of Trustees. A titan in the business world, Mr. Henderson was a trusted advisor to many. He enjoyed a successful career with NC Mutual Life Insurance Company, then the nation’s largest black-owned business. Breaking barriers yet again, Henderson became the first Black chairman of the Durham (NC) Housing Authority, leaving an indelible mark on the community. In honor of his legacy, the JJ Henderson Towers were erected in downtown Durham in 1978.
